St Knuts progress 3

I tried to lighten up the sunlit cobblestones and at the same time soften the shadows. Then I painted in the gaps between the cobblestones to bring back the definition that I lost at the beginning.

I feel that this painting is getting lost and I'm not sure why. I have an urge to start again. I should have done the light / shadow pattern first, then painted in the gaps between the stones. Feels like I've painted myself into a corner!
